Stop calling design a service

A designer who presents themselves as a service provider lets the client set the rules of the game from the first meeting. One who presents an expertise keeps control of the brief and the fee. The difference is not a matter of vocabulary. It is strategic.

“Win Without Pitching”: a foreword still stood behind

In 2014, I translated and wrote the foreword for the French edition of Blair Enns’s manifesto, published under the French title Gagner sans idées gratuites – La stratégie commerciale gagnante du designer entrepreneur, by the association Moneydesign, in partnership with Alliance France design and APCI.

AI doesn’t replace the designer, it reveals them

Photography didn’t kill painting. The personal computer didn’t kill design — it transformed it, expanded it, and ultimately clarified what a trained designer could do with these tools. Every technical revolution in creative fields follows the same arc: anxiety, redistribution of tasks, then the revelation of what human expertise produces that the machine — itself produced by humans — cannot produce alone.

Ethical design, solidarity economy: a value chain

Yesterday I was at the Regional Chamber of the Social and Solidarity Economy of Centre-Val de Loire for an informal, exploratory conversation. One question kept surfacing: what truly connects ethical design to the solidarity economy?

AI and the Myth of Creativity 4/4: Beyond the Creative Fortress

We thought we were original creators facing pale copiers. We discover that we too are imitation machines. So what remains of the wall that separated us from AI?

AI and the Myth of Creativity 3/4: Is Creativity Algorithmic?

We defend our mind as a sanctuary of originality. What if it were actually a factory? An extraordinarily sophisticated plant whose main business is to imitate, compress, and recreate the world.

AI and the Myth of Creativity 2/4: Creativity Under the Microscope

The Lovelace-Turing duel goes in circles because it rests on a mystical vision of creativity. What if, to break the deadlock, we had to commit a sacrilege: put creativity itself on the dissection table?

AI and the Myth of Creativity 1/4: Ada Lovelace’s Objection

Can an AI be creative? This question is not new. It was posed at the very birth of computing, by two visionary minds whose intellectual duel still shapes our greatest fears and hopes today.

Facing AI, the Urgency of Being Human

When a patient tells me that AI understands her better than those close to her, what is really happening? What if our capacity to project humanity onto otherness were not a cognitive error, but our greatest wisdom? An essay on the urgency to love in the face of radical difference.

The Designer’s Code of Ethics: Good for You, Good for Your Clients, Good for Everyone

I was invited to speak at the kick-off of the magnificent Luxembourg Design Festival on November 12, 2025, to discuss the genesis of the professional designer’s code of ethics created by the Alliance France Design. A meaningful symbol! During the event, I essentially said that “ethics is good for business.” After three inspiring days of festival and a festive Awards ceremony, I’d like to expand on that idea here.

Looking Back at the National Convention of Art and Design Schools, Marseille 2025

From November 4 to 7, 2025, I was invited to speak at the Assises nationales des écoles d’art et de design(National Convention of Art and Design Schools), organized by ANdÉA and hosted by the Beaux-Arts de Marseille, representing the Alliance France Design. This event, marking the association’s 30th anniversary, gathered the entire French art and design education ecosystem around the theme “Tomorrow’s Art School: Horizon 2050.”
